Office Miscellanea
April 9, 2008
Over lunch I grabbed my camera and took some shots of random stuff in my office. I know you all are dying to know what my working digs look like, so consider yourselves illumined:
This is my pencil-and-pen-and-sharpie-and-highlighter holder. It also has scissors (when I remember to put them back). On a trip to Boston a few years ago, I bought a few bobble-heads on clearance at the store across from Fenway Park. Lesson learned: cheap bobble-heads tend not to stick together well. So, stay away from the cheap bobble-heads. Unless, that is, you are interested in an over-sized pencil-topper. Then, by all means, buy cheap! One more word of warning: cheap bobble-heads look NOTHING like the players they’re supposed to. I think my “Greg Maddux” and “Chipper Jones” figurines had the same head. Only the name on the base set them apart. I think this is Chipper.
This is my un-ruled Moleskine notebook, resting on top of my jacket, on a desk in my office. I have two desks…one for my computer and pencil holder, and one for stacking things on. Like jackets, and notebooks. The peace sticker was purchased for $1 in an open-air market in Portland, OR. The lady told me she only sells stickers to the most handsome men. And, me, being a sucker for compliment-dishing hippie-ladies, passed over a crisp Washington, and there you have it. Side note: I prefer unruled notebooks, because sometimes I like to doodle.
This is a mostly-deflated Gilbert XT300 rugby ball that I purchased in South Africa a few Christmases ago. It sits on a shelf above my desk next to my cricket ball, my American Meat Institute baseball (the AMI ball is signed by Juan Marichal, Graig Nettles, and Mike Boddicker)[h/t ESPNGIRL], and in between “St. Symeon the New Theologian: On the Mystical Life, vol. 2″ and Niebuhr’s “Leaves from the Notebook of a Tamed Cynic.” It needs some air.
And this is Planty. It’s an ivy of some sort, I think. It has miraculously survived the harsh office climate, mistreatment and starvation, and water deprivation. Recently I’ve begun shoving some MiracleGro food sticks down in his soil, and he seems to like it.
That is a mini-tour of my office in 4 snapshots. Maybe tomorrow I’ll bring my wide-angle lens in, and let you see the whole shebang at once.

I wonder where a person might get an AMI baseball? This past year we had Al Bumbry, Robin Roberts and Bob Boone. I got one from before my time at AMI that is signed by Harmon Killebrew, Luis Tiant, and Tommy John.

I would have linked to your blog, but I seem to recall that you stopped blogging. And linking to your Wikipedia entry just doesn’t seem right. Do you have an AMI page, by any chance?
