Photographic Reactions

Date March 27, 2008

bwprotest-4.jpgRather than checking Flickr every day to see if there’s been any action on my photos, I just subscribe to the RSS feed for the comments. That way, if someone comments, it pops up in Google Reader.

Imagine my surprise when I logged on this morning and found some new comments on this old photo. [Warning: Strong language, may be offensive.]

Obviously, the commenter has some strong emotional response to the image. Is this a good image, in that it evoked such an apparent rage and urge to do violence? Or, is the message and the way it’s presented *too* inflammatory? Is there even such a thing?

I was tempted to just delete the comments (after all, it could just be one of my friends trying to be funny), but in the end, I decided to let them stay in their profane glory. Thoughts?

I tend to lean toward the leave the comments in their glory camp.

It doesn’t reflect on you, but rather the commenter. And usually people will call them out for it. These also happen to be quite timely considering the last Obama speech.

Obviously, this guy knows a lot about who Jesus is. He seems to have adopted all of his teachings. Love, peace, grace all evident in his comments.

FYI - the other time I’ve heard the epithet “sand ni#$!r” used, it was from a Searcy resident and former Harding student.

Personally, I find the photo offensive (but not too inflammatory to leave up). But I find the comments much more offensive. I would leave the them up — it reflects on the character of the commenter, not you.

    Three theories:

    1) It’s a real comment from a genuine dead-ender who’s drinking the kool-aid by the gallon.

    2) It could be from a friend; the grammar and spelling are really good. This guy could be a product of one of our finer institutions of higher learning.

    3) You did it yourself and you’re just trying to get me to feel sorry for you.

I disagree with the statement being made, but the picture isn’t too inflamatory. Still, I’m not sure that the rage expressed in the comment was the result of the power of this image. I figure that the commenter (assuming it’s a legit comment) sits around filled with rage looking for places to spew it.
