The Iced Ring Mystery, Continued.

Date February 14, 2008

On another recent trip to the supermarket in question, I noticed the following sign:

“Donuts have been moved. See Bakery Clerk for assistance.”

Certainly, up until a few weeks ago, you would walk up to the donut/iced ring case, use a piece of pastry tissue, and select your own donut, or pig’s ear, etc. One day, we walked in and were surprised to find no donuts/iced rings available. They had been moved into the bakery proper, and behind glass. Now, you had to point out which donut/iced ring you wanted, and a helpful hair-netted woman (to date they’ve all been women, but that’s not to say they don’t have any men working in the bakery), would bag it up for you.

So, now we have conflicting nomenclature…”donuts” on the sign that is on the former donut/iced ring case, and “Iced Rings” on the little card inside the current donut/iced ring case.

Are they trying to ease us into the use of the “iced ring” label by alternating for a short period? Or, are they trying to mess with our heads?

More details to come…

I recently saw a caption to on a photo, in the NY Times if I remember correctly that said, “Obama dunks ‘donuts’ with supporters.” I was wondering why donuts was in quotation marks…now I know.
