Bringing In The Sheaves…
February 12, 2008
That song was all I could think of when I walked up to this church. I had passed this small village on my way out to see an historical anti-slavery fort (oddly, “the only thing worth going to Gulu for” according to the Bradt travel guide…), and had my motorcycle taxi driver stop on the way back into town. Something about the sheaves of grass being piled up against the facade of this bombed out, empty shell of a church.
I have no idea of knowing if my driver/guide knew what he was talking about (after all, he wasn’t from this little village, and I’ve found that in many African cultures it is the height of rudeness to say “No” to something, so they’ll say “Yes” even if it’s not true), but when I asked, he said that it has been destroyed by the LRA during the extensive civil war. This photo shows the “inside” of the church, such as it is, with the crumbling plaster and the grass growing where the pews once stood.
