Lutheran Organ Pipes

One year ago today, Sara and I visited my cousin and his family in Wartburg, a little village outside of Pietermaritzburg with a large German population. This is a shot of the pipes of the organ in the “upper” Lutheran church in town. The organ is listed as a historical landmark. That evening we dined on “eisbein” at the lovely Wartburger Hof hotel.

After spending the day in the chaotic maelstrom that was once my “hometown,” getting away to this quaint village nestled among the sugar case fields and pine forests was a nice respite. And, it was nice to be out of the car for a while…

I spent three weeks in Pietermaritzburg with Lester and Wanda Duncan over 30 years ago and have often wondered how much has changed over the years with the end of apartheid. In those days, few people had televisions and you had to have license from the government to even own a radio. It was a life-changing trip for a naive girl just out of Harding College. Your mom and I were friends and suitemates at HC. I’ve been reading your blog for a while - thought I’d share my memories. Tell your mom hi for me.
